The first time I used the Neti pot I thought I was going to drown. If you have never heard of this charming little tool, it looks like a miniature tea pot, and holds several ounces of liquid.
Why do people use it?
For unpleasant-sounding but sinus-clearing nasal irrigation treatments. That’s right. You fill the pot up with a mixture of warm water and saline solution, put it into one of your nostrils, tilt your head, and let the solution run through your sinus cavities and out of the other nostril.
Is this new?
No.
The evidence shows that people have been performing various forms of Neti pot treatments for a long, long time. As near as I can tell in my research, it was originally used in yoga treatments in India. Breathing technique is pivotal in yoga practice, and clearing out the sinuses improved their breathing quality. The less blockage in the sinuses, the more air could pass through unobstructed.
There have been variations in the materials used in various version, such as clay or glass. My own neti pot is ceramic.
Yes, I have continued using it, even though the first experience was a little unsettling.
Does it work?
I say yes, without reservation. I use mine every single day. Over the past two years, this has resulted in me getting fewer colds, because germs are not allowed to settle and fester in my head as long as they would be able to without the irrigation.
I still get colds, but this is where I have seen an even better result. When I start to feel the symptoms of dryness or itching in the back of my throat, I increase my Neti pot treatments to twice a day, once upon waking and just before bed.
If the cold persists, it is usually much less severe than it otherwise would have been. I also believe that I recover faster while I’m performing the sinus cleansing regularly.
I have family members who flat out refuse to try it. They worry that it will hurt, or that it will burn, or that it will make them gag. All of these things are possible while you’re learning how to perform the treatments, although the pain is extremely minor, not unlike getting water up your nose when you go swimming.
The appropriate mixture of saline and water is also important, but most modern Neti pots have packets of saline that come with the product, so getting too much is less likely.
In summary, if you get sick more often than you would like to, you have nothing to lose by giving it a shot. Self improvement is a gift to ourselves, and we’ll always make our best progress in life when we’re healthy!
